Audio Bitrate Explained: What 128, 256, 320 kbps Really Mean

Every MP3 or AAC file has a bitrate — a number like 128, 256, or 320 kbps — and it's the single biggest factor in both sound quality and file size. Understanding it saves you from either wasting gigabytes or needlessly degrading your music.
What Bitrate Actually Measures
Bitrate is how many bits per second are used to encode the audio. Higher means more data devoted to reproducing the original sound, which generally means closer to the source — up to a point. Think of it as the resolution of an audio file.
The Common Tiers, Honestly
- 128 kbps: The old "good enough for earbuds" standard. Fine for podcasts and audiobooks where voice is all that matters. Music here loses sparkle, especially in cymbals and reverb.
- 192 kbps: A reasonable middle ground. Most casual listeners won't object to music at this rate on decent headphones.
- 256 kbps: Transparent for the vast majority of people on normal equipment. This is where "I can't tell the difference" becomes true for nearly everyone.
- 320 kbps: The top of the lossy ladder. Indistinguishable from the source for essentially all listeners, but roughly 2.5× the size of 128.
Lossy vs. Lossless
All the numbers above are lossy: some audio data is discarded. If you want zero loss, you need lossless formats (FLAC, ALAC), which typically run around 800–1000 kbps and preserve the original exactly. That's worth it for archiving a music collection you care about, and pointless for a voice memo.
The File-Size Math
Size scales almost linearly with bitrate. A three-minute song is about 2.7 MB at 128 kbps, 5.4 MB at 256, and 6.7 MB at 320. A 10,000-track library at 320 is roughly 67 GB; at 256 it's about 54 GB. The difference adds up only at scale.
Choosing for the Job
- Podcasts, audiobooks, voice: 64–128 kbps is plenty.
- Music for commuting: 192–256 kbps.
- Music you archive and love: lossless, or at least 320.
- Sharing with friends: 256 kbps keeps files reasonable without audible compromise.
A Note on Privacy
If you're converting or re-encoding audio, do it locally. There's no reason to upload a recording — possibly a private one — to a website just to change its bitrate. A browser-based converter handles the transcode on your device and hands you the file without it ever touching a server.
