How to Convert PDF to JPG, PNG, or WebP Without Losing Quality

I can’t count how many times I’ve had to pull a single page out of a PDF and turn it into an image. Sometimes it’s a client contract that needs to be embedded in a presentation. Sometimes it’s a beautiful infographic from a report that I want to share on social media. And sometimes it’s just a PDF that someone sent me and I need to quickly grab a screenshot‑quality version to drop into a chat.

Over the years I’ve tried a dozen different methods — from using paid software to sketchy online tools that made me nervous about where my files were going. What I’ve settled on is a workflow that’s simple, free, and keeps everything on my own machine. Let me walk you through it.

The Problem with Most PDF‑to‑Image Tools

Before I found a tool I trusted, I used one of those popular “free online PDF converters” that pop up when you search. You upload your file, wait for the server to process it, and then download the result. It worked fine — until I noticed a few things that bothered me.

First, the quality was inconsistent. Some pages came out looking crisp at 200 DPI, while others were a blurry mess. Second, there was no transparency about what happened to my file after I uploaded it. Was it sitting on their server? Did anyone look at it? For a personal document that’s fine, but for a client contract or a sensitive financial report, that’s unacceptable. Third, the site was plastered with misleading download buttons that tricked me into installing browser extensions I didn’t want.

That’s when I started looking for a better way — and ended up building part of GhostConvert specifically because of this frustration.

Choosing the Right Output Format

The first decision you need to make is which image format you want. It sounds minor, but it makes a big difference in file size and how you can use the image later.

  • JPG is my go‑to for most PDF pages, especially if the page contains photos or complex graphics. It compresses well and is universally compatible. I usually use a quality setting around 85–90%, which gives me a sharp image without the file being huge.
  • PNG is the format I choose when the page contains a lot of text or line art, or when I need a transparent background (though PDF pages rarely have transparency). The text stays razor‑sharp, but the file will be larger than JPG. For a multi‑page document, I avoid PNG unless I specifically need lossless quality on a few pages.
  • WebP is my new favorite for anything that’s going on the web. It combines JPG‑level compression with PNG‑quality clarity, and it supports lossless compression if you need it. The only reason I don’t use WebP everywhere is that some older applications still can’t open it.

My personal rule: if I’m emailing the image to a client, I send JPG. If I’m embedding it on a website, I use WebP. If I’m archiving it for reference, I keep it as a lossless PNG.

Resolution Matters More Than You Think

A few years ago I made the mistake of converting a PDF floor plan to a 72 DPI JPG. It looked fine on my screen — until someone tried to zoom in on the measurements and everything turned into pixel soup. Since then I’ve paid a lot more attention to the output resolution.

Most PDF viewers render pages at 72 DPI by default (that’s screen resolution). But for printing or detailed viewing, you need at least 150 DPI, and ideally 300 DPI. The trade‑off is file size: a 300 DPI image of a full‑page document can be several megabytes as a PNG, but as a JPG or WebP it’s usually manageable.

GhostConvert renders each PDF page at double the viewport size by default, which translates to roughly 144 DPI on a standard screen. That’s a sweet spot that keeps text readable and images crisp without blowing up the file size. If I need higher resolution, I can tweak the settings, but for everyday use this is more than enough.

Batch Converting Multi‑Page PDFs

One of the features I use most often is extracting every page of a PDF as a separate image. Before GhostConvert, I’d scroll through the PDF and take screenshots of each page — which is slow, messy, and results in inconsistent sizes. If you pull your network cable after the page loads, the conversion still works perfectly. For anyone handling legal, medical, or financial documents, that local processing is a non‑negotiable feature.
